DANCE GROUP NAOUSSA
The Music and Dance group Naoussa Paros was created many years ago. The group aims to bring to prominence the cultural heritage of the island.
Over the years all the artistic performances have help this aim. They have also cooperated with the local artists to develop and enhance the social and artistic life of the island.

Foundation, actions
In 1988 an effort was made by a group of people, all local residents, to ensure that the traditional music and songs of the island were kept alive. This effort culminated in the formation of the “Naoussa Paros Group” which has up to date given performance in Parow, Antiparos, Athens, Xanthi, Chios as well as abroad in Portugal and in Holland.

This specific group was officially founded in 1993 and its aim was to make the music, traditions, songs and nonetheless traditional dances of Paros well Known and preserved through time.

A cassette is already in circulation in which one can see the traditional dances of the island and listen to its distinct traditional music. This cassette can be sought under the name of “Traditional Rythms and Songs of Paros”.

There are dance groups as well as musical ones. There are two groups of musicians and the “Theatrical Group of Naoussa” which is separated in two groups ( adults and juniors). An important aspect of the group is the “Chorus of Naoussa” which has various songs and takes part in many competitions.
The costumes worn by the group are exhibited every summer in the “Folklore Collection Museum” of Greek regional outfits.
Two books have published, one with recipes on the delicacies of Paros (in English and Greek) and the second “Sailing in the traditions of Paros” (in Greek).

The dancing performance are always accompanied by live music which is played by instruments, which are both local and traditional, such as lute, touberleki, vocals, tsabouna and toubaki. These take place in the forecourt of the church of Panagia in Naoussa as well as in other areas of the island.
The group haw performed in Greece as well as abroad, in counties such as Gr. Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland, Cyprus, Turkey and Malta.

The group has been honored with the following awards…
In July 1991 during the 46 the International Festival at Lagochlen in Wales the group was honored with the 2nd Prize after its performance among participants representing of 17 other counties.

In 1989 during the European Competition in Xanthi, performing among 14 other groups, the group of Naoussa received the 3rd prize.

The program of the performances includes dances and presentations of a variety of customs of Paros as well of other islands. The performers wear the traditional representative clothes of each island.

The group has also been brotherly bound with other groups whose interest are similar. Among such are Pyrsos from Naoussa, Macedonia Greece. Cultural visits are also exchanged and their aim is to bring people closer.

The clothes worn during performances have been carefully sought and chosen by Literature teacher Mrs. Ipapanti Roussou, an expert on the subject. The text is attributed to the work of Mr. El. Menegos.
